Carrie Phelan Named 2023 Principal of the Year by CASDA

Carrie Phelan, Principal of the Knickerbacker Middle School in the Lansingburgh Central School District has been selected for the 2023 Principal of the Year Award by the Greater Capital Region Principal Center and the Capital Area School Development Association (CASDA). This annual award recognizes a principal for exemplary leadership qualities and for making a difference in the lives of their students. First given in 1991, this award's criteria are based on the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders that endorse the qualities of effective educational leaders who promote each student’s academic success and well-being.

Carrie PhelanMs. Phelan will be presented with the award on Thursday, April 20 at the CASDA Annual Awards Dinner being held at Franklin Terrace in Troy, NY.

Upon hearing about the award, Ms. Phelan said, “I was very surprised, but honored. I work with an amazing and supportive team of administrators, teachers, staff and students. That is what this is all about.”

Ms. Phelan is a graduate of Lansingburgh and started her career in education there as a teacher in 1999. After teaching for several years, she became the Knickerbacker Middle School Assistant Principal before eventually accepting the position of Principal.

As building leader, Ms. Phelan has worked with her faculty and staff to develop a shared vision for Knickerbacker Middle School that emphasizes high-quality teaching, learning, equity, and inclusiveness. Collaborative is a word used by many to describe her leadership style, whether she is encouraging teachers to regularly have team meetings or holding quarterly focus groups with the school’s employees, students, and families.

Lansingburgh district administrators spoke highly of Ms. Phelan in her nomination application. Rebecca McGrouty, Assistant Superintendent of School Improvement wrote, “While working with her, I am continually impressed with Carrie’s commitment to excellence and vision for the future” and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Antonio Abitabile wrote, “Due to her professional demeanor, she is widely admired and respected by her staff, students and the community at large.”

The entire Lansingburgh Central School District congratulates Ms. Phelan on this well-deserved honor and thanks her for all she has done and continues to do for Knickerbacker Middle School.
