Superintendent Memo (Sept. 10): Start of Year Transportation Update

September 10, 2021

The following message from Lansingburgh Superintendent, Dr. Abitabile, was emailed to all Lansingburgh families on Friday, September 10.

Dr. Abitabile's message is also available on district letterhead here.

Lansingburgh School Community:
First of all, thank you for an outstanding opening week. Seeing students, families and staff safely and happily return to classes has been wonderful to witness. Slowly but surely, things are starting to feel more normal.

However, even with the best laid plans, you never quite realize where corrections need to be made until you run through them a couple of times. While classes and in-school routines seem to be running smoothly, bus transportation to and from school needs to be significantly improved. This week, we have heard from countless caregivers about delays lasting over an hour and bus runs that were completely missed.

As you may know, school districts across the state and country are experiencing a shortage of bus drivers as we begin this new school year. Our District contracts with a bus company for buses and drivers. This means we do not own buses and we do not employ bus drivers. Currently, our bus contractor is short about a quarter of the drivers they have had in previous years.

In order to help with this, some bus routes at KMS and LHS have been rerouted to accommodate multiple runs per bus and driver. These improvements will increase efficiency throughout the entire district without changing arrival and dismissal times at TES and RPES.

We are expecting some of the new routes to begin on Tuesday (September 14) and increase through next week until they are fully implemented. BEGINNING TODAY, FAMILIES AFFECTED BY THESE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE CONTACTED TO LEARN OF THEIR NEW TRANSPORTATION SCHEDULE.

I truly appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through this.

Ever Upwards,

Dr. Antonio W. Abitabile, Ed. D.
