Join us in welcoming Lansingburgh Central School District's new Athletic Director: Thomas Murley!
With JV/Varsity sports now up and running for the Fall 2023 Athletics Season, some may have already even had the chance to meet Mr. Murley, but we checked in so you could learn a bit more about him before everyone returns next week. We look forward to more Lansingburgh students, families and faculty/staff meeting Mr. Murley very soon!
Tell us a little about yourself and your background. 
Last school year, I worked as the Athletic Director for Brunswick (Brittonkill) Central School District and before that, I worked for 17 years in the City School District of Albany. In Albany, I served in several capacities as assistant athletic director, athletic trainer, coach and physical education/health teacher. In those roles, I worked with students of all ages and was deeply involved in the successful operation of athletic programming over the years.
Prior to working in education, I worked as an athletic trainer in professional hockey and arena football. I tended to the medical needs of several Hockey Hall of Fame players/coaches and was also a part of the Albany Firebirds Arena Football Championship training staff in 1999.
I grew up here and graduated from Lansingburgh High School (Class of 1995). After high school, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training with a minor in Business Management from Springfield College in Massachusetts. While at Springfield, I was the team captain of the ice hockey team. I also have a Master’s degree in School Health Education from Sage College in Troy.
I currently reside here in Lansingburgh CSD with my wife and two children, both of whom attend Lansingburgh Schools.
What drew you to Lansingburgh as a place you wanted to work?
Being an alum who also lives in the district, I really wanted to make a difference in the community where my family and I reside. The amazing athletic facilities here are among the best in the state and are an athletic director's dream. I've seen from my own children attending Lansingburgh schools, that the faculty and staff here make it so special. They are committed to putting students first and giving maximum effort to make it a great experience for all of them.
How did you prepare for the already up-and-running Fall 2023 Season? What are some of your goals for when everyone returns next week?
My "official" start date was today (September 1), but I've been busy the last few weeks getting to know our fall coaches and ensuring they are ready for a successful start to the season.
As we start the school year next week, my top priority is forming connections. I aim to get acquainted further with our coaches, faculty, staff, students and their families. Building relationships, listening and being accessible are important to me as I work to establish myself more in the Lansingburgh school community.
What's something about you and your work style you want everyone in Lansingburgh to know right off the bat?
I'm accessible and approachable. I pride myself on attention to detail and planning ahead so there are no surprises. As an athletic director, you are always planning several weeks ahead to ensure everything is coordinated so the coaches and student-athletes can be fully prepared to be at their best.
My goal is to support our coaches and student-athletes so that they have what they need to succeed. I want each of our student-athletes to have a fulfilling and memorable experience participating in Lansingburgh athletics. I want our programs to teach them the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, cooperation and respect. It is my hope that they can then utilize those values for a lifetime.
Finally, what's life like outside of work for you?
Outside of work, I stay quite busy with my own children’s athletic schedules. When I am not coaching or watching them play, I enjoy playing ice hockey and skiing. Annually, I participate in and also serve on the board of directors for the Capital Cup for Kids Hockey Tournament, which raises funds to support several charities in the Capital Region that assist families in need.
Outside of our athletic ventures, our family enjoys traveling to Cape Cod, where we spend time at the beach and explore all that the Cape has to offer.
