Academic Intervention Services
New York State Academic Intervention Services (AIS) are services designed to help students achieve the learning standards in English language arts and mathematics in grades K-12 and social studies and science in grades 4-12. These services include two components:
- Additional instruction that supplements the general curriculum (regular classroom instruction) and/or
- Student support services needed to address barriers to improved academic performance.
The intensity of such services may vary but must be designed to respond to student needs as indicated through State assessment results and/or the district-adopted or district-approved procedure that is consistent throughout the district at each grade level.
Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is a comprehensive framework for providing academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support in schools. The multi-tiered system includes three tiers of instruction, intervention, and supports. At all levels, decisions regarding student support should be data-driven, and attention should be on the selection of evidence-based practices and fidelity of implementation through a team approach. MTSS is designed to support ALL students while utilizing a problem-solving team approach to address both academic and non-academic needs.
