Developments at Turnpike Elementary School

The Chicks Arrive in Kindergarten Classes at TES

Mrs. Schwenker a retired Lansingburgh teacher and our resident chick expert who we call "Mother Hen" has been helping the kindergarten students hatch chickens from eggs.  The students have been learning about the life cycle of chicks and have been observing incubators set up in the Kindergarten classrooms.  We waited and waited and finally they started arriving last weekend.  Still left in the incubators are a few duck eggs  Mrs. Schwenker was given by a local farmer.  This is the first time we are hatching duck eggs; we are anxiously waiting to see when they will arrive.

Alphabet Countdown at TES

We are excited to announce the beginning of the 2014 Turnpike Alphabet Countdown! Beginning on Tuesday, May 20th, each remaining school day will be devoted to a letter of the alphabet. Classes will participate in a special activity to celebrate each letter. While some days will be celebrated individually in classrooms, many events will be schoolwide! This will be a wonderful way to celebrate the conclusion of our year together as a school!

Click Here to view the Calendar (PDF)

Thanks to support from the Turnpike PTA, items from home will not be needed on most Countdown days. Any date with an * indicates a PTA-sponsored event and all necessary supplies will be provided at school.

We look forward to the conclusion of our year together and also these fun alphabet events!

Turnpike Box Tops for Education

The PTA built a beautiful mailbox for children and parents to drop off the box tops for education that they are collecting. The mailbox is in the front foyer of the building and will be decorated seasonally. Not only is this a beautiful addition to our entry way here at Turnpike, it also provides a motivational and functional way to collect our box tops! Please keep saving your box tops. They help us provide many wonderful things for our students.

Library Invites Young Readers

The Turnpike Elementary School Library was recently remodeled. Thanks in part to the generosity of our PTA we were able to add comfortable and inviting furniture. Our students love to cuddlie up with a book on our flowers and bugs. It is exactly the warm and inviting space we had hoped to create for the children.
