Uncertainty in Planning the 2009-2010 School District Budget

Recently, the media has indicated that additional funding through the federal stimulus package will be provided to area school districts to offset some of the expected cuts in state aid. However, it is unclear as to whether or not the Lansingburgh Central School District will be receiving funds and if so, the actual amounts and restrictions that will be placed on the use of these funds. This uncertainty makes developing a budget for the 2009-2010 school year particularly challenging.

The Board of Education is legally required to adopt a budget by April 24, 2009 and district residents will vote on the proposed budget on Tuesday, May 19, 2009. Current state aid projections include a $915,656 reduction in foundation aid compared to the current year and, as the district has not been notified of federal stimulus funding, our budget planning does not include additional revenue. This makes it difficult to preserve programs and services while keeping any local tax levy increase to a minimum.

At Board of Education workshops, occurring on March 10, 17, 31 and April 7, 14 (tentative) and 21, detailed discussion of development of a district budget for the 2009-2010 school year will take place. Workshops will be held at the Library Media Center at the secondary school campus located at 320 Seventh Avenue, Troy, NY 12182, beginning at 7:15 p.m. District residents are encouraged to attend. Public input is welcome and will be given consideration by the Board of Education and administration throughout the budget development process.
