School District Capital Improvements Update

In February of 2008 a $2.9M Capital Improvement Project was approved by district voters. The project includes renovation of the middle school auditorium, redesign of the Turnpike Elementary School bus loop, conversion of the high school shop area to a state of the art instructional technology facility, conversion of a high school classroom to a health office, installation of white boards at the elementary schools and various other improvements. State Education Department approval of the project plans was received in April 2009 and construction bids were opened and reviewed at the end of May. Unfortunately the bid amounts exceed the project budget by over $600,000. The Board of Education will be rejecting the bids and the district will rebid in the fall. We believe that bids will be more favorable at that time and are hopeful that we will be able to retain all project components within the $2.9M budget.

Therefore, project work will not take place this summer as had been anticipated, but in the summer of 2010. We are disappointed that there will be a delay, however we are optimistic that by doing so we can complete all of the work as had been originally planned.

Capital improvements that are funded under a prior bond issue will take place in the district this summer, 2009. Included will be resurfacing of the high school track, roof replacement at the middle school and high school, window replacement at the high school, and heating system conversion from steam to hot water at the middle school. Because of the work that will occur, the middle school/high school summer school program will be housed at Rensselaer Park. An elementary summer school program, which is now possible because of Title I stimulus funding and delay of the Turnpike bus loop redesign, will be at Turnpike Elementary School. Dates that the track will be inaccessible are not yet determined. Please check the website for updates.

The middle school and high school will have limited access throughout the summer, but will be accessible for office functions.

If you have questions regarding the capital improvements taking place this summer or in the future, please contact me at 233-6850, Ext. 3400 or at ggoodwin@lansingburgh.org.

Best wishes for the summer.
