Knickerbacker Middle School has been identified as a School in Need of Improvement Year 2 for English Language Arts, under the No Child Left Behind Act. The identification is based upon the fact that the subgroup of Students with Disabilities did not meet adequate yearly progress on the New York State English Language Arts Assessment for two of the past three years, 2005-2006 and 2007-2008. There has been improvement over the past three school years. However, it has not been sufficient for the Students with Disabilities subgroup, as the benchmark for making adequate yearly progress increases each year. The academic success of all students is our mission. Thus, an extensive initiative of professional development, restructuring of special education and intervention services and curriculum review is taking place. Staff is working closely with the Special Education Training Resource Center of the Questar III BOCES. A school improvement plan created by a team of staff, parents and others, under the leadership of the principal, has been implemented. We are confident that the efforts taking place at Knickerbacker Middle School are resulting in improved academic performance for all students, including Students with Disabilities.
Parents of Knickerbacker Middle School students will soon be notified of the availability of supplemental educational services for eligible students and other information regarding the school’s accountability status.
