Sawyer, Porcelli Honored at Football Awards Dinner
Lansingburgh High School senior Chris Sawyer picked up his trophy as a Section 2 scholar-athlete award winner, while football coach Pete Porcelli was also honored as Coach of the Year among Class A-level programs at an awards dinner on Monday, May 12th at the Turf Inn on Wolf Road in Colonie.
The dinner is sponsored by the Section 2 chapter of the National Football Foundation. There are 61 schools that play football in Section 2.
Sawyer, a standout linebacker for Lansingburgh, helped the Knights finish 11-2 and advance to the Class A New York State tournament’s championship game.
Porcelli, Lansingburgh’s coach since 2001, has a career record of 63-14 at the school and his teams have gone to the Section 2 Super Bowl for Class A schools in each of the past six seasons.
“I am deeply honored to be presented with the Coach of the Year award on the same night that Chris Sawyer was also honored,” said Porcelli. “Chris has been an impact student-athlete for us since he was first moved up to the varsity level during his freshman year. The coaching staff wishes Chris the best of luck as he continues his student-athlete career at Springfield College in the fall.”
