Gridder McGirt Headed to New Haven

Lansingburgh High School’s senior football standout Nyquan McGirt will continue his academic and athletic career at the University of New Haven, he announced recently.

A first-team All-Area selection for offense by The Troy Record Newspaper, the running back will “redshirt,” or sit out the 2008 season as New Haven, which has been without a football program since 2003, resumes play as a member of the Division II Northeast 10 Conference in 2009.

“It was a good decision,” said McGirt. “The coaches seemed like they want to get football back on track, and I want to be a part of that.”

After a transfer from Catholic Central High School for his senior season, the 5-foot-10, 180-pound McGirt became a key member of Lansingburgh’s team that won a Section II Class A title and advanced to the championship game of the New York State tournament before its season ended. McGirt rushed for 1,231 yards and 12 touchdowns.

"He’s a great kid, a great character kid," said Lansingburgh football head coach Pete Porcelli. “He was an integral part of our success. He has been gifted with the ability to run with the football.

McGirt is also a top sprinter at Lansingburgh and in Section II. He will study Sports Marketing at New Haven and consider bringing his speed on the track to the college level when the time comes.

McGirt will play for former University at Albany assistant coach Peter Rossomando at New Haven.
